• Self-haul to a Pueblo-area landfill or transfer station: roughly $25–$45 minimum load fee for one or two mattresses, plus 35–50 minutes of round-trip driving and about $8–$14 in fuel from most Pueblo West addresses. Total real cost: $35–$60 if you already own a truck and straps.

Four states — California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon — fund mattress recycling through a fee added at purchase, which is why residents there can drop a mattress at a collection site for free. Colorado has no such program. No recycling fee is collected at the register here, so no free drop-off network exists to spend it.

The practical result: every mattress leaving a Pueblo West home either goes to a landfill for a tipping fee, gets driven roughly 110 miles north to the Denver metro, where the nearest dedicated mattress recyclers operate, or gets picked up by a hauler.

That Denver option deserves an honest look, because it's the one most "eco" articles quietly skip. A Denver mattress recycler charges roughly $25–$35 per unit to accept a mattress. From Pueblo West that's a 220-mile round trip, about 3 hours 45 minutes of driving, and 9–12 gallons of fuel in a half-ton pickup — call it $35–$45 in gas on top of the recycling fee. You'd spend $60–$80 and most of a Saturday to recycle one queen. A mattress is about 75–95% recyclable by weight — roughly 25 pounds of steel in an innerspring, plus foam, felt, and cotton — but the environmental math on a solo 220-mile drive for a single unit is genuinely arguable. It makes sense if you're already headed to Denver, or if you've got six mattresses and a trailer. For one bed, it's a wash at best.

People underestimate this every single time.

• Twin innerspring: 40–50 lbs
• Queen innerspring: 70–90 lbs
• King innerspring: 100–130 lbs
• Queen memory foam: 80–100 lbs, and it flops — worse to carry than a heavier innerspring
• Waterbed: 150–250 gallons of water to drain first, which is 1,250–2,000 lbs before you touch the frame

A queen is 60" x 80". A standard short-bed pickup is about 67 inches of bed length with the tailgate up. It does not fit flat. It rides at an angle, held by straps, and Colorado's unsecured-load rules make you liable if it leaves the truck — a citation plus whatever it hits. Two ratchet straps cost about $18 and are non-negotiable if you self-haul.

If your mattress is coming down a staircase or out of a second-floor bedroom in one of the two-story builds off Purcell or McCulloch, budget a second person, not a second trip.

One local detail that catches new Pueblo West residents: this is unincorporated Pueblo County, and the Metro District does not run municipal curbside trash. You contract a private hauler, and standard residential service almost never includes bulky items. There's no "set it out on bulk pickup week" here, because there isn't one.

Don't hire us if you're buying a new bed. Nearly every mattress retailer will haul the old one for $0–$40 at delivery. That is cheaper than we can be, ever, because their truck is already in your driveway. Ask for it in writing on the sales order — it gets "forgotten" often enough that you should confirm before delivery day.

Don't hire us if you own a pickup, have one mattress, and have a free hour. Self-hauling saves you $60–$100. That's a real number. We are not going to pretend otherwise to win a $110 job.

Don't hire us for a single twin. Our minimum charge means a twin costs nearly what a queen does. If you know a dresser, an old grill, and a broken treadmill are coming out of the garage in the next two months, wait and bundle them. Don't hire us for a 12-unit apartment turnover. At twelve mattresses, a 20-yard roll-off dumpster at roughly $400–$550 for a week beats per-item pricing, and your crew can load it on their own schedule. We'll say so on the phone.

Understand the bed bug limitation. If there's a known or suspected infestation, the mattress must be sealed in plastic before we arrive, and some disposal facilities refuse it outright or apply a surcharge. We may decline the job or add $40–$75. Any hauler who promises otherwise is either not telling you or not telling the facility.

Donation is mostly a dead end here. Habitat ReStore and most Pueblo-area charities decline used mattresses on health-code and liability grounds, even in excellent condition. Expect roughly a 1-in-10 chance a used mattress finds a taker. Budget for disposal and treat donation as a lucky break.

Four variables account for nearly all quote variance:

• Access. Curbside is cheapest. Garage is close behind. Upstairs bedroom with a 90-degree turn at the landing adds real labor.
• Count. The first mattress carries the minimum; each additional one is marginal. Three sets are far better value per unit than one.
• Condition. Soaked, moldy, or rodent-damaged mattresses need containment and sometimes cost more to tip.

Weather is the wildcard nobody mentions. Late-summer monsoon storms turn long gravel drives on the west side of Pueblo West into ruts a loaded truck shouldn't attempt.
