HOT TUB DISPOSAL NEAR ME: COSTS

A hot tub is not a heavy couch. A 7x7 acrylic spa holds 300–500 gallons, and water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon — that's 2,500 to 4,200 pounds sitting on your pad before anyone touches it. Drained, the shell, frame, foam, cabinet, and equipment bay still run 400–900 pounds depending on whether it's a lightweight rotomolded tub or a full acrylic-on-plywood build with a redwood skirt.

The cost breaks into four things:

• Labor — two people, sometimes three. A tub that has to be cut into six pieces with a reciprocating saw eats 6–10 demolition blades and adds 45 minutes.
• Weight-based disposal fees — transfer stations bill by the ton. A hot tub typically lands at 0.2–0.45 tons, and disposal fees in Pueblo County generally run in the $40–$70 per ton range for mixed bulky waste. Call the station to confirm current rates; they change.
• Truck volume — a cut-down spa fills roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of a 15-yard dump trailer, which is why "just add it to my other junk" pricing rarely works out cheaper than a flat spa rate.
• Access difficulty — gates under 36 inches, retaining walls, side yards under 4 feet, and second-story decks each add real time.

Nobody recycles a hot tub. The acrylic shell is bonded to closed-cell polyurethane foam and fiberglass, and no facility in southern Colorado separates those layers economically. The shell is landfilled. The steel frame, pump housings, and heater element are worth roughly $15–$40 in scrap at Pueblo-area yards — real, but not enough to change your quote. Anyone telling you your tub is "100% recycled" is selling you a feeling.

Draining is the one part we ask you to do, both to keep the price down and because it takes 2–4 hours through a standard garden hose bib on the equipment side. Two local complications matter here.

Chlorine and bromine kill landscaping. Stop adding sanitizer 48–72 hours before drain day and let free chlorine drop below 0.1 ppm — a $12 test strip pack tells you. Water above 1 ppm will brown out xeric plantings and buffalo grass fast, and the shock of 400 gallons at once will drown roots even if the chemistry is fine.

Do not run it into the street. Storm drains in Pueblo West discharge to arroyos and eventually the Arkansas. Chlorinated water in a storm drain is a stormwater violation, not a gray area. Spread it slowly across a large area of your own lot, or run it into a sanitary cleanout if you're on city sewer.

If you're on a septic system — and a large share of Pueblo West lots are — do not drain a hot tub into it. Dumping 400 gallons into a tank sized for 1,000–1,250 gallons floods the leach field, pushes solids into the drain lines, and can cost $8,000–$15,000 to replace. Spread it on open ground away from the field instead.

Kill the power first. Most spas run a dedicated 240V, 50-amp GFCI circuit. Shut the breaker, verify with a tester, and if the whip is hardwired rather than plugged, have an electrician cap it. We will not cut a live conductor, and we won't touch panel work — that's licensed trade, and doing it for you would be doing it badly.

This section costs us jobs. It's still true.

Your tub is under about 6 years old and still runs. A working 2020-or-newer spa has a real resale market. Listed honestly at $800–$2,000 on Facebook Marketplace in the Pueblo/Colorado Springs corridor, a functioning tub usually moves in 1–3 weeks, and the buyer brings their own trailer and crew. You go from paying $500 to collecting $1,200. That's a $1,700 swing in your favor. Don't hire us for that tub.

The only problem is a failed pump or heater. A replacement circulation pump runs $180–$350 installed; a heater element is $90–$200. If the shell is sound and the plumbing isn't cracked, disposal is the wrong call by a wide margin.

You have a truck, a helper, and a free Saturday. A DIY teardown is genuinely doable on a simple above-ground tub with driveway access. Budget 4–6 hours, a $35 blade pack, and $40–$90 in transfer station fees, plus a trailer rated for 1,000+ pounds. You'll save roughly $300. If you're 25 and it's 60 degrees out, that math works. If you're 68 and the tub is on a second-story deck, it does not.

Where DIY goes wrong, plainly: foam dust gets everywhere and doesn't vacuum out of gravel; acrylic shells crack unpredictably and throw shards; a partially drained tub is 1,000+ pounds of shifting water that has broken ankles; and transfer stations will turn you away at the scale if the load isn't tarped.

Our real limitations, stated up front:

• We don't do electrical disconnects, gas line work, or panel changes. If your tub is hardwired, get an electrician there first or expect us to reschedule.
• We don't repair the deck, pad, or siding after removal. Pulling a sunken tub often reveals rotted joists or a stained, sun-bleached ring on the concrete. That's your project.
• Frozen tubs are a hard no in December–February. Ice can't be pumped, and 2,000 pounds of frozen water in a shell we're cutting is a genuine hazard. We'll come back in the thaw.
• If your tub sits behind a locked gate we can't fit through and the only alternative is disassembling your fence, that's a separate quote — we don't take fences apart for free.
• Same-day service isn't a promise. Realistic scheduling in Pueblo West is 2–5 business days, longer in April–June when yard work stacks up.
• If your HOA or a Pueblo West Metro District covenant requires notice before exterior work or debris staging, that's on you to clear before we arrive. A tub sitting in a driveway overnight has generated more than one letter.

Text or email 4–6 photos: the tub from two angles, the equipment bay with the panel open, the gate or path we'll use, and the driveway. From that we quote a firm number, not a range. On site:

1. Confirm the breaker is off and the tub is drained to under an inch. 2. Pull the cabinet panels and the equipment bay; steel and motors get separated for scrap. 3. Cut the shell into 4–8 pieces with a reciprocating saw — roughly 20–35 minutes of noise. Neighbors within about 100 feet will hear it, so we don't start before 8 a.m. 4. Load, sweep, and magnet-sweep the pad for screws and staples. 5. Haul out. You get a photo of the cleared pad before we leave.

Ask any company you call these four questions, ours included: Is the quote firm or an estimate? Are dump fees included or billed after? Who handles the electrical? What happens to the price if the tub won't fit through the gate? A company that can't answer all four from photos is going to renegotiate in your driveway.
