Spa techs price by the visit, not the mile, but the mileage shows up anyway. Typical structure for a Springs-based shop serving Pueblo West:

• Diagnostic/service call fee: $89–$149, often waived or credited if you approve the repair
• Labor: $125–$195 per hour after the diagnostic
• Trip surcharge outside their core zone: $75–$150 — Pueblo West is almost always outside it
• Delivery and setup on a new tub: $250–$650, more if a crane or narrow-gate access is involved
• Scheduling reality: 5–14 days for a non-emergency visit, longer in December and January when everybody's heater quits at once

A single "my tub won't heat" visit that turns into a replaced heating element realistically lands $400–$750 all in. That's before you've decided whether the rest of the tub is worth keeping.

Sticker price is maybe 65% of the number. Ballpark figures for a Pueblo West install in 2026:

So a "$6,000 hot tub" is frequently a $8,500–$10,000 project once the panel work and pad are done. Plug-and-play 120V models skip the electrician but heat about 1–2°F per hour instead of 3–5, which in a Pueblo West February means a 12-hour recovery after a heavy soak.

Running cost: a well-insulated tub in this climate draws roughly 250–450 kWh per month in winter and half that in summer. At Black Hills Energy residential rates in the $0.13–$0.16/kWh range, budget $35–$70 a month, plus $180–$400 a year in chemicals. A poorly insulated or 15-year-old tub can easily double the electric side — we have hauled off tubs whose owners traced a $90/month winter bump to a saturated foam cabinet.

This is the part a showroom will not tell you, and it costs us the sale too, since a tub nobody buys is a tub we never remove.

Skip it if you soak less than twice a week. The fixed cost of a hot tub does not scale down with use. At $50/month energy + $25/month chemicals + amortized $8,500 over 10 years, you are at roughly $146 a month whether you get in 30 times or 3 times. Two soaks a week is about $17 per soak. Four soaks a month is $36 per soak. Most people who quit did so in year two, not year eight.

Skip it if you're selling within 3 years. Hot tubs are close to appraisal-neutral in Pueblo County. Buyers who don't want one treat it as a removal liability and say so in inspection objections. We get calls specifically because a tub killed a walkthrough.

Do not buy used sight-unseen. A tub with a cracked manifold or a waterlogged foam pack is worth less than zero — see below.

Repairs that usually aren't worth it on a tub over 10 years old: - Control pack / circuit board replacement: $1,200–$2,500 - Full pump and heater assembly: $850–$1,600 - Shell crack repair on a spider-cracked acrylic: $400–$900, and it often re-cracks within 2 seasons - Multiple plumbing leaks inside the foam: labor alone runs 6–10 hours because a tech has to dig the foam out by hand

Acrylic shells run 10–15 years before the gelcoat and jets go. If your tub is 12 years old and needs $1,400 of work, you are putting a third of a new tub's price into a machine with maybe 3 seasons left.

> The rule we'd give a neighbor: if the repair quote exceeds 30% of a comparable new tub, and the tub is past year 10, stop. You're funding a slow-motion disposal.

Local conditions matter more here than the brochures admit.

• Elevation around 4,800 feet plus high-plains sun degrades vinyl covers and acrylic faster than at sea level. Covers that a manufacturer rates for 7 years commonly go 4–5 years here, and replacement is $400–$700.
• Wind. Open lots on the west side of town see gusts that flip an unstrapped cover into the fence. A cover lifter and wind straps are not optional.
• Hard water. Pueblo West's supply runs hard enough that scale on heaters is a real failure mode; without a pre-filter you're descaling every 6–12 months.
• Freeze risk during vacancy. A tub left unheated through a single hard Pueblo West cold snap — we've seen -10°F nights — can split a manifold in under 48 hours. That single event converts a working tub into a removal job.
• Large lots cut both ways. Space is easy here; the hard part is that a tub tucked behind a 36-inch gate on a half-acre still has to come out the same 36-inch gate.

A free or $200 used tub means the seller has decided it's cheaper to give it away than to pay for disposal. That's the whole story. Assume:

• Transport: it weighs 400–500 lbs dry and needs a trailer, 3–4 people, and dollies
• Unknown condition: you cannot test a drained tub. You'll fill it — 350–450 gallons — and only then discover the leak
• Electrical: you still need that $900–$2,200 240V circuit
• Exit cost: when it fails, disposal is on you

If you want a used tub, buy one that is currently running, filled, and hot, from someone who will let you sit in it. Anything else is a project with a hidden floor price of about $1,500.

If the decision lands on "get it out," here's the honest mechanics. A hot tub cannot go in a standard trash pickup and Pueblo County transfer stations charge by weight — a cut-up tub is roughly 600–900 lbs of debris including the frame, foam, and cabinet.

• Tub 10+ years old, repair over 30% of replacement, or the foam is waterlogged → remove it and decide about a new one separately
• Soaking fewer than 2× a week, or moving within 3 years → don't replace it
• Buying new → get the electrician's number before you sign, not after
