APPLIANCE REMOVAL COST: PUEBLO WEST

Here's what's behind those numbers, and the honest part most pricing pages leave out: there are several situations where paying anyone to haul your appliance is the wrong call.

Appliance pricing is not really about weight. A full-size washer is about 200 lbs and a chest freezer about 150 lbs, but the freezer costs more to remove. Three things move the number:

• Refrigerant. Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers, and some wine coolers contain R-134a, R-600a, or older R-12. Federal law (Clean Air Act Section 608) makes it illegal to vent it. Certified recovery adds roughly $20–$45 in real cost per unit, and any company charging you the same for a fridge as for a dishwasher is either eating that cost or not doing it.
• Path of travel. A garage-level dryer takes two people about 10 minutes. The same dryer in a finished basement with a 90-degree stair turn takes 25–35 minutes and a stair dolly. Labor is the single biggest line item.
• Disposal destination and scrap value. Steel scrap in southern Colorado has been running roughly $115–$165 per ton. A washing machine yields maybe 60–80% recoverable steel, which is $6–$10 of scrap value. That offsets a little of the price, but nowhere near the labor.

Pueblo West adds a fourth factor most cost articles never mention: drive distance. Pueblo West is unincorporated Pueblo County, and the transfer station and scrap yards are in Pueblo proper — a 12- to 20-minute haul from most of the West depending on whether you're off McCulloch, Purcell, or out toward Liberty Point. On a single-item job, that round trip is 40 minutes of unbilled time. It's why single-appliance pricing looks high relative to volume pricing, and why bundling matters so much here.

These reflect curbside-to-garage-level access, single unit, in the 81007 service area:

• Refrigerator / freezer (full size): $95–$175
• Mini fridge / dorm fridge: $65–$95
• Washer or dryer (single): $75–$130
• Washer + dryer pair: $130–$200
• Stacked or pedestal-mounted laundry unit: add $25–$50 for disassembly
• Electric range or oven: $75–$125
• Gas range (line already capped): $85–$140
• Dishwasher (already disconnected): $70–$110
• Over-range microwave: $50–$85
• Water heater (40–50 gal, drained): $85–$150
• Window AC unit: $55–$90
• Chest freezer, 15 cu ft+: $110–$180

Volume changes the math fast. Four appliances at single-item pricing would be roughly $340–$500. As a bundled load it's usually $260–$380. Once you're at six or more units — a rental turnover, a flip, an estate — you're better off pricing it as a partial truckload than item by item. This is the section that costs us jobs. Read it anyway.

If your appliance is under about 8 years old and still runs, do not pay for removal. A working 5-year-old side-by-side has real resale value. Listed on Facebook Marketplace in the Pueblo/Pueblo West groups at $150–$300, working full-size appliances typically move in 3–10 days, and the buyer hauls it themselves. You go from paying $130 to collecting $200. That's a $330 swing. Paying us to take a working appliance is, bluntly, lighting money on fire.

If you already own or can borrow a truck and have a second set of hands, a fridge run is a $10–$25 job, not a $130 one. The Pueblo County transfer station charges by weight or by minimum load, and appliance disposal fees are modest — the real cost is your Saturday morning and the risk of a dented door frame. If your time is worth less than $60/hour on a Saturday, DIY wins on pure math.

If you're replacing the appliance, ask the retailer first. Lowe's and Home Depot in Pueblo both offer haul-away with delivery, commonly $25–$50 or bundled free on promo. Best Buy has run free haul-away on delivered majors. If you're getting a new fridge delivered anyway, paying a third party $150 to take the old one is a straightforward waste. We'd rather tell you that than take the job and have you find out later.

> If you're buying a replacement and it's being delivered, call the retailer about haul-away before you call us. On a single appliance, they'll usually beat our number — and we'll tell you so on the phone.

If it's one small item and you're not in a hurry, wait. Single-item pricing is where the drive-time economics are worst for you. If you know you'll have yard debris in April or a garage purge in the fall, hold the dryer in the garage and bundle it. You'll pay $75–$110 for the same removal that would've cost $130 alone.

If you need a gas line capped or a hardwired 240V circuit disconnected, we are not your first call. We are not licensed plumbers or electricians. We will not cut a gas line. A licensed plumber in Pueblo charges roughly $110–$200 for a gas shutoff and cap, and that has to happen before we load. Some haulers will pull a "capped" gas range that isn't actually capped. That's how you get a gas leak in a closed kitchen.

If the appliance is scrap-value-only and you enjoy the errand, the scrap yard will pay you. A washer, dryer, and electric range together might net you $18–$35 at a Pueblo scrap yard. That's not a payday, but it's better than negative $290. Note that most yards will not take a refrigerant unit without a recovery tag.

Where appliance removal actually goes sideways in this market:

• The "free appliance removal" ad. Some scrappers advertise free pickup, then show up, decide your unit "isn't worth it," and either leave it or ask for $80 cash. Free pickup is real only for clean, high-steel, no-refrigerant items with easy access. Get the price confirmed before the truck rolls.
• Undisclosed disconnection state. Quotes assume the unit is disconnected. If the dishwasher is still plumbed and wired in, that's 20–30 extra minutes and usually a $25–$50 add. Say so upfront and the quote holds.
• Doorways. Older Pueblo West homes and manufactured homes on the outskirts often have 30-inch interior doors. A 36-inch French-door fridge does not fit through a 30-inch door without removing the doors from the unit. That's 15–20 minutes and, occasionally, a broken hinge cover.
• Refrigerators that have been off with food inside. A unit that's been unplugged for two weeks in a hot garage is a biohazard, not an appliance. Expect a $30–$75 surcharge or a flat refusal. Empty and clean it, or say so when you book.
• Weather. Pueblo West gets high wind, and unpaved or gravel drives out west of the golf course turn to mud. A truck that can't get within 40 feet of the door adds carry time.
• Same-day expectations. Same-day is often possible here, but a Monday-morning call for a Monday-afternoon fridge pickup during a busy stretch may cost a $25–$40 priority fee, or it waits until Wednesday.

The honest framing: you're paying for two insured people, a truck, 45–90 minutes of total time including the Pueblo round trip, legal refrigerant handling, and the fact that your floor and door casings don't get gouged. On a $130 washer removal, roughly $70–$85 is labor and drive time, $15–$25 is fuel and vehicle cost, $10–$20 is disposal, and the rest is insurance, overhead, and margin. It is not a high-margin business, which is why nobody in this market can do a legitimate single-fridge pickup for $40.

The value shows up in specific situations: you physically can't move it, you don't own a truck, it's on a second floor or in a basement, it's a refrigerant unit and you don't want to deal with recovery documentation, or you have five items and one afternoon. Outside those, DIY or retailer haul-away often wins, and we'd rather you know that.

Have these ready and the number you're quoted will be the number you pay:

• Appliance type and rough size — full-size vs. compact matters more than brand
• Whether it contains refrigerant (fridge, freezer, AC, dehumidifier, wine cooler)
• Where it sits: garage, kitchen, basement, second floor
• Whether it's disconnected, and for gas units, whether the line is capped
• How many total items — bundling is where you save real money
• Your general area of Pueblo West, since drive time is a live cost
