APPLIANCE REMOVAL COST NEAR ME

Appliance pricing is not really about the appliance. It's about three things: refrigerant, labor minutes, and disposal weight.

• Refrigerant units (refrigerators, chest freezers, mini-fridges, window ACs, dehumidifiers) legally require certified recovery before the metal can be scrapped. That's a real cost line, generally $25 to $45 per unit, not a made-up surcharge.
• Stairs and access. A dryer in an attached garage takes two people about 8 minutes. The same dryer in a finished basement with a 90-degree turn at the landing takes 25 to 35 minutes and often a door removal. That's the $40–$75 difference.
• Disposal weight. A full-size fridge runs 200–280 lbs. A front-load washer with concrete counterweights runs 200–250 lbs. A gas range is around 130–180 lbs. Landfill and transfer costs in Pueblo County are weight-driven, so a four-appliance job is not four times a one-appliance job — it's usually about 2.5x.
• Distance from the transfer point. Most Pueblo West addresses sit 12 to 18 miles from the Pueblo disposal sites. Outlying properties past Wills Blvd or up toward Lake Pueblo add drive time, which is why some companies quote Pueblo West higher than in-town Pueblo. We don't, but you should ask.
• Volume discounts. Appliance #2 and beyond usually price at $45 to $85 each rather than the $95–$185 first-item rate. If you're on the fence about a second unit, adding it is almost always the cheaper move than a second trip later.

These are the jobs we actually run most weeks, with the price bands they land in:

• Single refrigerator, garage or kitchen, ground floor: $125–$185
• Washer + dryer pair, laundry room, disconnected: $150–$225
• Full kitchen swap — fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave: $285–$425
• Basement chest freezer, exterior stairs: $165–$260
• Water heater (40–50 gal, drained): $110–$165
• Four to six mixed appliances from a rental turnover: $340–$560

A quarter-truck minimum in this market runs around $175 to $225, which matters: if your single dishwasher is the only thing going, you're paying close to a minimum load charge regardless of how small it is. That's the single most common source of "why is it that much for one thing?" and it's a fair question. The truck, fuel, insurance, and two people's hourly wage don't scale down below a floor.

This is the section that costs us money, and you should read it before you call anybody.

If your appliance still works, do not pay to remove it. A functioning washer or fridge under about 12 years old has resale value. Pueblo West and Pueblo Facebook Marketplace listings for working full-size fridges realistically clear $80 to $220 in a week if you price at the low end and say "you haul." That's a $200+ swing versus paying us $150. Same for donation: local nonprofit resale outlets in Pueblo will sometimes pick up working, clean appliances at no charge, and the receipt is worth something at tax time. Call ahead — they turn down anything cosmetic-damaged or over roughly 10 years old.

If you're buying a replacement, ask about haul-away at the register. Big-box retailers delivering to Pueblo West typically remove the old matching unit for $0 to $50 as a delivery add-on. If you're already paying a $79 delivery fee, adding removal for $30 is far cheaper than a separate service call. The catch: they'll usually only take the appliance being replaced, only if it's disconnected, and only if it's on the same floor as the delivery. They will not take the extra freezer in your garage.

If you have a truck and a helper, self-haul is genuinely cheaper. Pueblo County disposal fees for appliances land in the neighborhood of $20 to $45 per unit, plus a refrigerant handling fee if applicable. Call your total gas and time at $25 to $40. So a self-haul fridge costs you roughly $50–$85 and 90 minutes of a Saturday. If your time is worth less than about $50/hour and you have a working back, self-haul wins on math.

Scrap metal is a wash, not a payday. People hear "they scrap it, so it should be free." Shred steel prices have hovered in the $0.04–$0.09/lb range at regional yards. A 240 lb refrigerator is $10 to $22 of scrap — minus the refrigerant recovery cost and the drive. Metal value doesn't come close to covering a truck roll for one item. It does start to matter on a 10-appliance commercial job, and that's where you should push for a discount.

> If a company offers to take a single fridge for free "for the scrap," ask what they're doing with the refrigerant. The metal is worth about $15. Somebody is paying for the rest, and if it isn't them, it's the air.

Plainly: skip us if any of these are true.

• One small appliance, easy access, and you own a pickup. You'll pay a near-minimum charge for 15 minutes of work. Self-haul.
• The appliance is under warranty or being replaced by a retailer. Bundle it with delivery.
• You need the gas line disconnected. We do not disconnect gas appliances. In Colorado, that's plumber territory, and a shut-off valve that looks fine can weep. Expect $95 to $185 for a plumber to cap a gas range line. We'll happily haul after they're done, but a call to us first just wastes a trip.
• The unit is hardwired — some ranges, most built-in wall ovens, some water heaters. That's an electrician, generally $110 to $250. Same logic.
• You're in the middle of an insurance or estate process where the appliance may need to be documented or appraised. Once it's gone, it's gone. Wait for the adjuster.
• You want it done for under $75. That price doesn't exist for a legitimate, insured, licensed-disposal operation in this market. Anyone quoting it either isn't insured, is dumping illegally, or is going to renegotiate on your driveway. Illegal dumping fines in Colorado start in the hundreds and can reach the thousands, and the trail leads back to the property owner more often than people expect.

Failure modes worth knowing before you book:

Frozen or seized units full of spoiled food. A chest freezer that lost power in a summer outage and sat for three weeks is a biohazard job, not an appliance job. Expect a $50 to $125 surcharge, sometimes more, and expect us to require it be emptied first. Some crews will flatly decline. Empty it, bag the contents, and the price drops back to normal.

Undisclosed stairs. Phone quotes assume ground-floor access. If the crew arrives and the freezer is in a walk-out basement with a 34-inch door, the price changes on site. Send a photo when you book — it takes 20 seconds and it's the single best way to lock a quote.

Doors that don't fit. Modern French-door refrigerators are 35 to 36 inches wide. Older Pueblo West homes built in the 1970s and '80s frequently have 30-inch interior doors. Door removal is standard for us, but it adds 15 to 20 minutes and occasionally reveals that the fridge was installed before the flooring was.

Water damage nobody knew about. Pull a 15-year-old dishwasher or washer and you find subfloor rot maybe one time in eight. We'll show you, but we won't fix it, and it can turn a $150 haul into a $2,000 repair conversation you weren't planning to have today.

Weather. Pueblo West wind above about 35 mph makes strapping a fridge upright on an open trailer unsafe. We reschedule rather than gamble. In January, frozen ground and ice on the driveway approach add real risk on a 250 lb item, and we may ask you to salt the path.

Get an itemized number, not a "starting at" number. A legitimate quote names the item count, the refrigerant fee, the access surcharge, and the total. Ask whether the price includes disposal — some outfits quote labor and then add tipping fees.

Bundle. If you have a fridge going out, walk the garage first. The marginal cost of adding an old grill, a dead treadmill, or a broken microwave to an already-scheduled truck is usually $25 to $60 each. Two separate visits cost you a second minimum charge. Disconnect what you legally can. An unplugged, drained, empty appliance sitting in the garage instead of the kitchen is often $30 to $50 cheaper because it cuts crew time.
